2022 Slade graduate, Selena Scott has a painting on display as part of an exhibition at Cambridge Artworks for Black History Month.
For those of you in London, Selena also has work currently on display at Genesis Cinema and 1B Window Gallery as part of an exhibition put on by Dark Yellow Dot, featuring “work celebrating black excellence in creativity.”
On her practice the artist says:
Using symbolism and loaded imagery, I allow the viewer to search for meaning, enabling interrogation and connection with the work. Sensitivity is at the core of my practice, using colour and light to convey emotional turmoil. I aim to redefine the portrayal of Black people through oil painting, a medium traditionally reserved to perpetuate western ideals.
Our take on Selena’s work:
When the artist chooses an urban setting, the struggle of that environment is conveyed: with introspection and melancholy, but not defeat. When she chooses a natural setting, the composition will combine a sense of distances – the trees or water or horizon stretching out – as well as enclosure: nature as a place of healing and belonging, as well as a powerful place, imbued with force.
