Alysia Webster has been selected as a finalist for the Graduate Art Prize 2017. She has been selling well since we introduced her earlier in the year and we currently have just 4 affordable works available – all under £250 – view and buy via her page.
Using mixed media or oil paint to create gestural, abstract pieces, Alysia Webster recreates the energy and movement of the landscapes she has experienced. Thick, sticky paint is seemingly forced across the surface in large, gestural motions while dripping, thinned oil colour seeps downwards, cutting through the picture plane to meet the edge. Experimentation is at play in the different qualities of mark-making and use of thinners to create a range of opacities. Alysia contrasts earthy tones with bright, captivating colour that can be read as the visualisation of energy and chaos. The viewer is invited to a visual display of what Ezra Pound poeticised: “Let the wind speak, that is paradise”. Webster’s use of medium to explore landscape is enthralling – the viewer can observe the vigour of the brushstrokes or delight in the gentle meeting of two colours as they merge seamlessly, becoming one.
