At this year’s Frieze Art Fair American artist James Turrell’s LED work ‘Incantation’ was on display. Will Copley, one of the latest artists to join the gallery, resonates with his experiments with light. The culmination of James Turrell’s career is underway in a volcanic crater in the desert of Arizona: he’s building a structure inspired by the celestial engagement of Inca architecture, seeking to create a “controlled environment for the contemplation of light.“
Will Copley also works with LED, on wood and canvas. His Light Paintings are both mystical and analytical, an admixture of the material and immaterial. He uses colour in both pigment and LED; the boundaries between organic and artificial, subjective and objective are in motion in these contemplative works. What would JMW Turner make of these contemporary theatres of light?
A graduate of Newcastle University in Fine Art, Will was previously a RBA Rising Star, has exhibited across the country and is a VARC 2022 Artist in Residence. See his available works curated below.
