Continuity and Change: Curating Skies

Skies are so eminently paintable, always offering new forms: endlessly surprising, abstract and tactile in equal measure. A subject realised in J.M.W. Turner’s hands, from his home skies over Margate’s east coast to the westernmost edge of the Hebrides; an artist who said, “I paint what I see, not what I know.” 

The way the artists curated here rise to the challenge of seeing is manifold. Take Emily Gregroy-Smith, who is constantly drawn back to her home coast in West Wales to transmit in her work its elemental freshness. An effect she achieves through blurring pigment, smudging the marks to wind-swept effect. 

Yasmin Davidson is palpably thrilled by her environment, as expressed by brushwork and buoyant colours. Nina Goldsmith’s ‘Velocity’ is visceral and irradiant. 

It’s as if celestial fingers have traced the blue sky with white markings in Briony Anderson’s series of cloudscapes.  The artist places clouds centre stage, not needing any excuse to focus on them alone – untethering them from the land echoed in these painterly formations.

Henrietta Clavering opts for a textured surface, and David Rae for icy stillness in his memory-scape.

Art Masters Emiko Aida and Sax Impey represent the sky to contrasting effects. Emiko Aida shows it diminished in size by the city, yet glowing; Sax Impey shows it to velvet effect, huge using silk screen printing on soft paper.
