I’ve been thinking about artwork that has an expansive quality… Some pieces open up the space of a room, like a sort of portal: unrepressed and inclusive. Surprisingly, dark colours can do this too and it’s a bit of an interior design anomaly that small spaces should be painted in light colours to appear larger, when actually, small spaces in dark colours can appear larger. Cool colours are also good for creating an expansive quality as they recede visually, as opposed to warmer colours, which have an approaching quality and can therefore appear to make a space smaller… So, along with this musing – here’s a selection of work that feels airy, expansive…
