“For an island that is relatively secluded, living on Uist doesn’t seem that way. Working life is visible everywhere.” Yasmin Davidson comments on her current home and inspiration for her paintings: the outer Hebridean island of North Uist. Certainly, none of her landscapes are sleepy. Be they from where she now lives or her travels in Canada, the artist’s works are both grounded in and lifting off from the scenery, with a distinct vein of magic realism like those landscapes of Peter Doig, one of the most renowned of living painters, and also from Scotland. The skewed perspective Davidson uses evokes landscapes and interiors that aren’t tamed, being too vast or various. Vibrancy is expressed by the brushwork and buoyant colours. The narrative suggested by titles such as ‘Forgotten Home’ and ‘Prayer Offering’ spurn the imagination on, to participate in the artist’s speculation as she is thrilled by her environment.

Artist Statement

Yasmin Davidson is a contemporary artist from Scotland, she works in the field of painting, drawing and sculpture. Yasmin graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone University in 2013 and has since had solo exhibitions and group exhibitions.

Vast experience of travel has allowed Yasmin to immerse herself in new social environments and to view everyday life from different perspectives.

Yasmin’s work holds a strong narrative and is often portrayed through the use of strong colour and expressive mark making.

Yasmin invites you to engage and to position yourself within her private world and the skewed reality her art inhabits. The work displays both humour and poignancy in equal measure, straddling the familiar and alien simultaneously.
