New Blood Art Commentary

Pettersson’s work bridges fine art and graphic design, and habitually explores how what is personal and innermost is shaped by public notions, and public instruments, of sentiment. Her most recent works are inspired by 50s children’s’ book illustrations, and are jerked into modernity with compelling results. Pettersson’s work is widely sought after; her paintings are held in private collections in the UK, Sweden, Holland, France, USA, Vietnam, Australia and Hong Kong.

Artist Statement

I grew up in Sweden but have since 1995 spent most of my time living, studying and working in the UK. I am currently living in Edinburgh where I work as an artist, designer and youth worker. I exhibit regularly around the country and beyond. Much of my work consider the environment I live in, from reflecting on my new surroundings, culture and domestic spaces when moving to the UK, to more recent exploration of ideas of belonging, migration, roots and home. The intimately familiar interests me, the symbolism of patterns and decorations, objects and rituals, but also what happens when this is taken out of context or is disrupted. Despite the sometimes screen print-like style, I paint and draw traditionally, in acrylics and oil, pen and pencil, sometimes using stencils to create patterns.
