After Impressionism

New Blood Art presents a selection of curated original artworks that capture the spirit of the post impressionists.

Gaugin, Cezanne and Van Gogh are at the centre of the National Gallery’s exhibition, and these works contain the spirit of these painters and those in their circle. In strong gestural line work, rich colours and expressive mark-making, these beautiful unique artworks are all produced by talented emerging artists. From Ella Squirrell’s languid portraits to Orlanda Broom’s florid, rich palette, these pieces are bold, emotive and totally unique.

Gauguin, Cezanne and Van Gogh

What’s so special about these three painters? They are all considered to be post-impressionists. All of them drew on the new approaches to mark making and colour laid out by the impressionists and made them their own. Frequently painting landscapes, still life arrangements and portraits, each artist broke new ground and deeply influenced the trajectory of modern art.

Paul Gauguin is best known for his vibrant ‘Polynesian Paintings’, drawing inspiration from the colour and vivacity of these tropical islands and their inhabitants. Drawing from a potent mix of primitivism, pastoral and cloisonnism, Gauguin actually spent time with Van Gogh. Perhaps the best known of the three artists, Vincent Van Gogh was never recognised in his lifetime. He painted now-iconic vivid, dynamic paintings, many of which drew on the depth of colour and quality of light of Southern France. Paul Cezanne was also deeply influenced by this area, as well as by Romanticism and Impressionism. He found new approaches to perspective and flaunted academic painting rules. You can read more about all three artists on the Nation Gallery’s website.
