In these three new ‘reflection landscapes’ by Carlos San Millan the artist chooses the dusk or dawn hour, when the light takes on the quality of water, as a hinge for his paintings. The contrast of an opalescent palette with darker tones, the trajectory of the waterway which aims at perspective: it’s an ineffable, living quality the paint seeks to express.

Sara Willett’s new work continues her bold perceptual explorations, grounded in landscape (‘Alpes Maritime – Evening’), suspended in nothing (‘Squeeze’) and intensely immersive (‘Drift’). Organic swarms of shapes are in the process of evolving; the artist’s use of opposing flows and contrasting rhythms makes for a fascinating experience of harmony. Sara describes how her the results of her process “play with the stability of the viewing experience, sometimes reversing the negative spaces and disrupting the saturated colour field, confusing the eye and tricking the brain.” The mark making is simple but laborious, an effort that leads to a sublime levity in the paintings.
Orlanda Broom’s use of black in her recent work is electrifying, so conducive to the colours’ intensity. They bring to mind the life of colour at night, of flowers at night: the mysterious visual flux between night and day. The technique Orlanda has developed using resin, which has a high-gloss finish, lends a succulent dimensionality to these works. You can experience envelopment by the rainforest, the ambivalence at entering into such a place overridden by sheer delight.
