Late Summer

In the philosophical system of Traditional Chinese Medicine there are in fact five seasons, including late summer, the exemplary inter-season period: a time of balancing and stabilising, giving and receiving to maintain integrity throughout change. In this Director’s Picks section we see how, when colour is not so loud, equilibrium can emerge. In limited or softer palettes attentiveness to the subtleties of shading and shaping with colour becomes clear. This is evident in the earthy tones of Lucy Davies, Peter Kettle’s gently eroded surfaces, or how Timothy Betton and Sara Willett prove that by using repetition of a single shape one can create a varied and rich canvas. The paintings shown here offer immersive and experimental approaches to both abstract and figurative work, attuned to the nuances of spatial flux.
