At New Blood Art, we are fascinated by the choices artists make – especially the art they are drawn to, collect, or choose to live with.
What Artists Like is our artist-led series that shines a fresh light on the New Blood Art collection, showing it through the eyes of an artist. The series feature interviews with artists and curated collections.
We represent nearly 300 wonderful artists at New Blood Art – each of them bringing their unique voice and vision to the gallery.
With gifting season upon us, we thought it would be interesting to invite a few artists to share their Christmas Wishlist
Each artist has selected three works available at New Blood Art that they’d love to receive as a gift, with a few words why.
The choices are fascinating. Continue reading to see which works each artist has selected.
Invited Artists:
1 – Lambent by Keren Luchtenstein.
“If I were to pick one word to describe what i love in art as a whole, it would be ‘playful’. Lambent exudes playfulness, the type of painting that can change a mood and make me smile. And i’m a sucker for the colour pink.” – Tyler Watson
110 x 90 cm | 43 x 35 in
Oil on canvas
£2500
2 – Tight-Knit b by Eleanor Dunning
“This painting really struck me as a beautiful example of colour and pattern composed so well; that it takes me a second to really appriciate the figurative image being depicted. Both elements within the composition feel thoughtful and as important as one another. Mundane objects being shown importance.” – Tyler Watson
40 x 50 cm | 15 x 19 in
Mixed media painting on canvas
£700
3 – House by the Sea by Niki Duffy
“House by the Sea really gives me a sense of nostalgia. Memories of visiting my mums place down on the coast really get brought to the surface. The street lamp taking the suns place in the setting sky line feels warming and playful.” – Tyler Watson
45 x 60 cm | 17 x 23 in
Oil on canvas
£600
1 – Yellow Strike by Liv Fox.
“A striking painting with a straightforward and confident composition, animated by a pleasing awkwardness.” – Ted McKenzie

1 – Maybe When I Get Bigger by Lindsay Mapes
“I love this painting because of its textural surface. The thick paint strokes remind me of fabric
and it almost mimics a tapestry or rug. I always see something different within the marks.
Sometimes I see an image of a person on a bike, other times I see a tree. It has bold use of
colours, it’s playful and fun. The simple colour palette evokes feelings of happiness!” – Yasmin Davidson
190 x 230 cm | 74 x 90 in
Oil on canvas
£10,000
2 – Bathers. by Laura Gaiger
“The simplicity of this painting is what first drew me in and the use of colour. The figures are
gently resting under what appears to be a hot sun. It is brave to be able to use such gestural
brush marks and to be able to convey a relatable image. Innocence and family holidays is
what comes to my mind when viewing this beautiful dreamlike painting.” – Yasmin Davidson
35 x 28 cm | 13 x 11 in
Oil on canvas
£600
3 – Street Lamp Glow by Gabrielle J Moore
“This painting is a warm image that reminds me of travelling. The colours and textures take
me back to an apartment block that I briefly stayed in Jodhpur, India. The painting holds a
sense of calm, away from the hustle and bustle of outside life. It’s an inviting image, it
provides a respite. The deep colours and almost moving shadows draw my eye in and it
makes me unwind in its soothing textures.” – Yasmin Davidson
60 x 60 cm | 23 x 23 in
Oil on clear perspex
£550
1 – Untitled 45 by James Morton
“This is my first one , I just love the combination of the way he’s using colour and the application of the paint . Rich and indulging with a slight darkness around the work , all my favourite things.” – Natalie Chapman
60 x 120 cm
Oil on wood
£2500
2 – It Seems That My Heart Would Break by Sonja De Graaf
“This is my next choice, delicate and beautiful with a brilliant title, I love words and the pull of the title made me fall in love with the work even more.” – Natalie Chapman
51 x 36 cm | 20 x 14 in
Watercolour on paper
£360
3 – The Son by Alice Wheeler
“I am drawn to the religious undertones of this piece. The composition is reminiscent of sculpture and the rich colours of Catholic iconography all with a modern twist.” – Natalie Chapman
40 x 60 cm | 15 x 23 in
Original photograph in permajet oyster print on photographic paper
£225
1 – Small Infinity (XXI.) by Jan Valik
“I love the ambiguity in this painting. It is evocative of landscape – some brush marks could allude to clouds or land, but nothing is quite pinned down, there is a sense of coming and going as marks appear and recede. There is a feeling of space – it seems like I am looking through into another world. The thinned layers of paint create a sense of luminosity while the limited palette adds to the sense of otherworldliness.” – Arlene Sharp
31 x 41 cm
Oil on canvas
£900
2 – Jigsaw by Lindsay Mapes
“Jigsaw feels lively, exuberant – it’s quite a small painting but packs a big punch! I am enjoying the colour and the composition. The purple jigsaw shapes cover the majority of the painting; however my eye is drawn to the edges to the lively small marks doing their job to encourage my eye to move around the work. The varied mark-making feels robust and energetic, and together with the bright palette makes this painting feel very much present and alive. ” – Arlene Sharp
60 x 80cm
Oil on canvas
£1500
3 – Kids In Trees by Helen Latham
“I am drawn to the looking-up perspective and how the figures of the children are rendered. The brush marks are simply and beautifully executed, providing just enough detail to evoke a realistic sense of children climbing in the dappled light and shade. I particularly like the lowest figure – simply the back of a stripy t-shirt and a foot sticking out the other side of the trunk is all that’s needed to recall the sense of a small child swinging on the branches. The subtle pale greens of the background, without any overt reference to sky, enhances the sense of an inner secret world in which the children are playing.” – Arlene Sharp

1 – I Am Rooted, But I Flow by Toni Cogdell
“I love the way Toni layers her work…the discovering of all the little details. And with this painting in particular, I love the flashes of warm colours.” – Julia Blackshaw
90 x 110cm
Oil on canvas (box frame)
£1850
2 – Dare I? by Helen Latham
“I love Helen’s use of colour…how they seem to glow and how they draw me into the moment. I can feel the conflict within the little figure…the pause before deciding.” – Julia Blackshaw

64 x 64cm
Oil on board
£750
3. Rustic Summer by Nicola Wiltshire
“The perfect simplicity. I love how the fabric is part of the painting…how it’s detail contrasts with the simplicity of the flat colours. I love the colour combination and how saturated the colours are…and the flash of pink beneath the yellow.” – Julia Blackshaw
51 x 51cm
Oil on fabric
£675
