New artist: Oliver Bragg

The play between myth and reality is explored with a political edge in the work of Oliver Bragg. Materialism, capitalism and globalization are explored in relation to technology’s export of humanity from its natural environment. Bragg’s work suggests a turn towards simplicity and the folk tradition of myth to develop our sense, once again, of the world – the real world – that awaits our attention. Using both pictorial and sculptural collage, Bragg’s works appear to jar expectations of the world – they appear inviting with nods to familiar objects and yet familiarity dissipates quickly into myth and unusual iconography. Humour, imagination and experience fuse together to unravel the symptoms of the modern world and to reinvestigate a human narrative that lives beyond -or perhaps despite – contemporary capitalism.

Oliver lives and works in London. He was awarded the ARTE/Cutlog prize in 2012 for the originality and pertinence of work, the evolution potential and the coherence of creation and took part in the Holiday In residency programme organised by Gasworks (London), Triangle France (Marseilles) and CAC (Vilnius) in 2007-2008.
