Marina Pcheliakova

Half-remembered everyday experiences form the subject matter of Marina Pcheliakova’s paintings. Rather than attempting to articulate or explain the past, her paintings embrace the blind spots and the forgotten. Gaps in our memory can be plugged. They can be filled, covered, or perhaps painted over. Combining the familiar and invented, the paintings become a space for sharing. Narrative is often implied but never fixed, allowing for new stories to develop and come into being alongside Pcheliakova’s. As viewers, we are invited to become part of the story, to add our memories and dreams to those in the paintings. Of course, these are layered, contemplative and often strange images, yet they are also images of technical prowess, displaying an ability to manipulate and manoeuvre paint. Gestural mark-making combines with flat linework to form tricky and complex surfaces, full of visual intrigue. For Pcheliakova, painting is a means of processing the past, of addressing trauma and inner pain, something that is often difficult to do alone. It is, as such, unsurprising that the paintings talk to us, inviting us to become part of the narrative, part of the story.
