Emilia Creighton's work is characterised by a painted transformational surface on which she employs a layered and poetical application of paint. Speaking to domestic, feminist narratives, her visually arresting paintings delve into the ephemeral nature of the human experience. Negotiating between the materiality of oil paint and form, her paintings emerge from the canvas in layers. Adjusting and adding over time. Responding to the most stubborn aspects of a painting, her work is matured by a 'solution-based' way of working. Her introspective, studio-based processes are oriented around overcoming the most stubborn aspects of a work. On first look her work appears to be still and observational. Fields of exposed brush marks build texture in layers, while boundaries are blurred by the careful application of paint. Tentative erratic line supported by arresting colour. Looking further, her feminist works speak strongly to the conditions necessary for the creation of works of art - security, confidence, independence. Creighton's approach embraces the process of becoming and transformation. Working intuitively, her paintings attempt to translate memory and sensation through the progressive manipulation of paint. Informed by critical feminists texts, her most recent work meditates on what it is to be a feminist creative today. Emilia lives and works in London, UK, born 2001. Graduating Arts University Bournemouth in 2024.
