Original drawing in mixed media on paper.

A delicate implosion of colour and shapes: this describes Daytime Illusions No.2 by Rosalyn Ng, in being both abstract and recognisable as a bouquet. Colourful arabesques fuse toward the centre of the artwork, while around the edges density begins to dissolve. The accelerated, gestural mark-making makes us think of Cy Twombly, who was himself at times a floral painter – and who said, “Everything lives in the present, it’s the only time it can live”.

Rosalyn Ng aims to depict the nascent – the burgeoning, budding, and fledgling of amorphous feelings and emotions. Translating them into ‘solid’ form, her drawings are depictions of spontaneous movements, both our wild thrashings and furtive shifts. Her work recalls Cy Twombly and Cecily Brown in their often pastel-influenced colour palettes, but especially their mixture of the dainty with the raw. Mystical silhouettes beckon in each piece, Ng using a mixture of media to explore forms as they come to fruition. Never cemented as an ideal or instantly recognisable shape, her unique style of mark-making explores what it’s like to yearn for certainty, the lack of which is what often invigorates life.
