Currently based in France, Wayne Sleeth is a painter of personal discovery, composing a work to his own evolving rhythm. Perceiving the act of painting a complex composition of hidden memory. Sleeth chooses to form open-ended ‘scapes’, whereby memories are shaped as inviting sensations. Landscapes and skylines become abstract forms, while emotive representations gain tangible presence.

Artist Statement

I am a painter and arts educator dividing my time between England and France. Primarily, l'm working according to my 'synaesthetics' of places lived, frequented or visited fleetingly. Neither landscapes nor seascapes, I ambiguously call most of my compositions 'scapes', an anagram of 'spaces'. Water is a common thread to my work.

Much travelled, I have exhibited throughout Europe (London and the north-east of England, but also Brussels, Berlin, Metz, Stuttgart, Split...) and permanently in Paris and Metz. I have work in collections throughout Britain, mainland Europe, Asia and the US.

For more than four years, l have been basing paintings on the themes and locations central to the work of Claude Monet in France, a great inspiration; Giverny and his waterlily pond, the Normandy countryside, but also - as a kind of inverse pilgrimage - returning regularly to London to paint Westminster and the Thames, again with contemporary tools to hand; polaroid and collage, spraypaint and markers.

A set of 31 paintings ( a nod to Claude Monet and his 30 ) of Metz Cathedral, along with a three-year series of manipulated poalroids, his 'pola-paintings' are due to appear in a full monograph of 120 pages in may 2021 :
