New Blood Art Commentary

Venezuelan artist Roselin Estephanía’s watercolour work is a mix of pure fantasy and realism. With a graphic edge and illustrative precision, each piece renders the feminine form in mystical and luminous scenarios that are instilled with both optimism and danger in equal measure. In 'Pienso en tu mirá (I think of your look)' (2020), eyes appear to bud in roses that crown the female subject, but also fall across her shoulders. Gazing at the viewer with a raised hand – is she telling us a secret or pushing us away? Are we complicit, or being watched? There’s a level of uncertainty in the work that makes for an intriguing viewer experience. Eyes are blanked or carefully rendered, Estephanía masterfully harnesses the medium of watercolour to explore the space between the opacity and transparency.

Artist Statement

My name is Roselin Estephanía, I'm a watercolor artist from Venezuela. I've been creating ever since I was able to hold a pencil in my hand. I went to "La Universidad del Zulia" to study Plastic Arts, with a mention in drawing.

My painting style is completely surreal, some of my collectors call it realism with fantasy, which I agree with, so I describe my art like that as well. Even though I've been a full time artist for over a decade, it was only a couple of years ago that I started selling my originals, feeling them too personal before to even consider selling, but after seeing the interest of many collectors I feel understood, I feel my message appreciated.

Coming from a country like mine... well, it's limiting and exhausting. Not only politically, or economically, but mentally and emotionally. Our current situation bleeds into my work constantly; it's my reality, sometimes I feel like I'm screaming into a void. So even though I'm pretty optimistic, and I love to see the beauty everywhere, I must face the sharp contrast of our horror whenever I'm outside of my house. So I put it all in my paintings: the beauty and the sadness.

Either way, I just keep painting.
