The John Moores Painting Prize.
The John Moores Painting Prize winner was announced on Friday and was awarded to artist Rose Wylie. Wylie, an emerging artist, is the oldest artist to win the prize at age 80. Her style was described as “..fresh, unpredictable and cutting edge and is everything we’ve come to expect from the winner of the John Moores.”.
A well used, though nebulous label, the term ’emerging’ describes a dedicated artist who is beginning to reach critical moments in their career development.
Unlike other prizes such as the Turner Prize, which excludes artists over the age of 50, the John Moores Painting Prize has no upper age limit and is open to the public. Previous winners have included David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Euan Uglow and Peter Doig. New Blood Art’s David O’Malley was shortlisted this year – a fantastic achievement.
