Welcome to the pop worlds of Tyler Watson where overlooked objects become main characters. Desk lamps, monstera plants, support units and more re-emerge with humour and magic from the background of daily life.
Order artwork up until December 18th and it should arrive for Christmas. Please let us know if you’re ordering a gift and we’ll ask the artist to prioritise sending it. Can’t choose what to give, but would like to give art? You can give a New Blood Art voucher, to be used on any artwork on display.
Watson’s work has attracted the attention of major British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith. In the past two years Watson’s pieces have featured in boutiques from Marylebone to Mayfair, sharing with Smith’s clothes a ‘tailored eccentricity’. Both have an eye for using opulent colour in distinctly modern ways – think of the famous Paul Smith ‘pink building’ in Los Angeles cutting against a Cali-blue sky. Then return to Watson’s own use of pink that draws those bold colour juxtapositions directly onto a canvas.
Other collaborations include work with the iconic department store Liberty London, Edward Bulmer Paint and House of Vans. Watson has also recently exhibited in spaces including The Royal Exchange, Broadway Gallery, Alon Zakaim and last year had work featured in Bonham’s Secret Postcard Auction.
In the spirit of Christmas an apt comparison is with The Nutcracker: Watson’s work depicts a ballet of objects that come alive at night. See ‘We Dance in the Dark’ (2022), one of his complex pieces that rewards sustained looking. Notice the lamp coming from outside the window, and golden leaves in the forefront appearing to float without a stem. In mauves, dark greens and rich greys Watson’s angular and metallic scene brings to mind Art Deco, particularly the sumptuous portraits by Tamara de Lempicka. Yet instead of humans, Watson’s de-populated worlds show an abundance of inanimate and plant life in intense attention to tonal gradations.
We’re really pleased to be showing new large-scale pieces including ‘We Dance in the Dark’ and ‘Still Until Spring Comes Through’. Smaller pieces start from £175, and all act as perfect meta-reminders of the room at large, where our living quarters can take on whole new meanings if we let them.
