“Our only guidance is our homesickness, photography, 2023
The title is a quote from Der Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse, the photo in the center was taken by my father, of my mother pregnant with me. The reflection of a salesman’s suit in the mirror is my faceless dad, marking the absence of father in my childhood.
With my family drifted and settled in central China from Mongolia, I was born in Wuhan, raised in South East Asian and now lives in London. The tiny photo that represents the beginning of my life sits at the eye of a tornado with images of my life track floating around, questioning who I am and weaving out my drifting life.”

You Liang Zhu is a multi-disciplinary artist who focuses on photography, installation, and publishing. She explores the intricacies of human tenderness as well as cultural heritage and both individual and collective memory. Zhu uses her work to investigate Queer maternal relationships, colonialism, and the experience of being an immigrant ethnic minority raised in China. Her photographs are subversive and profoundly personal, focusing on the female experience and portraiture to uncover subconscious and deep-seated unspoken emotions. Zhu uses her camera lens to allow the viewer a deeper understanding of her own survival strategies and coping mechanisms that she has developed, building an intimate relationship with her audience as she shows them a glimpse of vulnerability.
