The Sea: A Space for Invention

In the popular imagination, the sea is a space of possibility. A horizon line provides a point at which our vision stops, beyond which we can no longer see. A line past which invention and storytelling are made possible. The works on display here are often open to interpretation, they can be read as images that convey something visceral and emotive, recalling memories or experiences. Equally, whether through the layered and varied mark-making of Stephen Todd’s seascapes or through the exaggerated glow of the nighttime harbour in Octavia Madden’s paintings, the works are often open-ended, giving us somewhere for our imagination.
