The Colour of the Outdoors

Thoughts of the outdoors, of nature and of gardening evoke a great depth of thought. One might initially think of colour, perhaps shades of green come to mind, engulfing the landscape; dying leaves give us reds and oranges; the mottled light gives us shades of blue. Equally, the outdoors is a space of play, somewhere to escape, to get lost in thought. Brought indoors, the smell and colour of freshly cut flowers will lift a room’s atmosphere.

The artworks here are united in their use of the outdoors as subject matter, yet diverse in their treatment of the pictorial surface: some works are about colour, some provide the viewer with a sense of calm, while others evoke emotions, feelings, narrative.
