Little Pops of Colour

As we navigate our way through the midst of winter, there is solace in the thought that spring is in sight, the days are getting longer, and new shoots will soon be appearing. This is reflected in this selection of works, united in their vivacious and assertive use of colour. Look at Old Master or even early modernist paintings, and the colours likely bear a resemblance to the natural world. The last century saw the gradual development of fluorescent colours and neon lights. In art, Dan Flavin’s 1960s light works are amongst examples of the transformative effect fluorescent colours can have on the way we view art.

The artists featured in this curation could not be anything other than contemporary, all use colour in new and innovative ways. This can be seen in the jolts of colour that make Lindsay Mapes and Joanne Wheeler’s textile works so striking, so assertive. Or perhaps you’ll find that Sophie Baker and Yasmin Davidson’s bold use of colour to depict the outdoors provides a much-needed lift, a boost to see us through to spring.
