Zhen Feng Ang is a multimedia artist who uses labour intensive media such as paper cutting and fine silk embroidery. Ang explores what effort means to both the artist and the work itself by exhibiting the process of making as well as the final piece. The work is intricate and playful as Ang experiments with different and unusual media such as a single strand of their own hair and mulled wine spices mixed with resin. The combination of these materials with the traditional art making processes of paper cutting and embroidery exemplifies the juxtaposition between the often messy art making process versus the more polished outcome. Ang conflates both these parts of the work to make pieces that call the viewer’s perception into question and make them appreciate the labour that has gone into it.
My practice concerns and questions the notion of ‘effort’, through the destruction and modification of paper cuttings and sewing. The work is produced through labour-intensive processes; which appear in the installation of the work; presented in the outcome, appearing in the scraps alongside or transforming into part of the work.
