Stina Aldén is a Swedish artist based in Glasgow, working primarily with analogue photography. Nominated by their tutor at the Glasgow School of Art for the New Blood Art Emerging Art Prize, Aldén’s work draws from a formative upbringing within a hyper-masculine, labour-intensive environment, a culture that continues to inform their approach both conceptually and structurally. Aldén’s subject and use of material: metal frames holding analogue processes, endurance based methods of image-making, all bear this origin.
Aldén prints each work in the darkroom, using light, chemistry and repetition as a technical discipline: the cyclical rhythm of exposure, development, evaluation and reprinting. Each finished print is the result of those repeated calibrations, processes that embed a sense of duration and endurance in the work.
Their images may suggest a slow unbinding: the beginnings of release made visible through posture, light and process.
