New Blood Art Commentary

Using urban tapestries to reflect the contemporary world, emerging artist Moemi Takano combines culturally potent handcraft with contemporary reinvention.

Looking at Takano’s work, it’s a delight to see that the distinctive ethnic traits of her craft are not lost to modernism. Instead, Takano uses a variety of mark-making, embroidery, and dyeing techniques to create captivating homages to traditional Japanese handcraft; the artist then compliments these creations to sensational effect by reimagining them in a contemporary light.

The effect of Takano’s work is striking, and emits a powerful message which serves to remind us all of the resilient bonds between new and old.

Artist Statement

My current artistic practice revolves around the idea of subversive aspect of handcraft, particularly that of textiles. By applying various mark-making methods such as print, dyeing and embroidery, I create surfaces that explore intersections between text, textile and art history.
