Nicola Wiltshire’s solo show presented by Paul Smith goes on display today, with an opening viewing, Friday 25th, that you’re welcome to attend.

Pigments – eroding, sedimenting, tectonic – trace the artist’s paintings, in meandering, looping mosaics, or swathes like layers of water. Here the experience of looking is both sensuous and deconstructed: your gaze is reflected back at you.

Paint can always be, is always applied anew. The original movement of Abstract Expressionism sought unprecedented ways of creating the substance of feeling.

Skies are so eminently paintable: always offering new forms, endlessly surprising, abstract and tactile in equal measure.

Drawing can be a startling intimate medium, with the exquisite effort clear to see.

“Light plays an integral role within my work and there is an ambiguity between the precision of photographic apparatus and the structured randomness of the organic.”

They bring to mind the soft fluidity of Georgia O’Keeffe’s organic abstractions. There’s a sense of being compelled, mesmerised: the fascination that brings you in closer to look at nature or at art

Check out these abstract works from this week’s curation. Many have a diffuse energy to them, and would make a brilliant focal point to a room. Lively colours and organic shapes make for rejuvenating optical adventures.

Thomas Cameron, James Bristow, Sarah Shaw and Felicity Gill (as an invited artist) will be showing at the Mall Galleries November 11th to 20th – online until the end of the year – as part of the annual ING Discerning Eye exhibition.

Christian Neuman was recently visited in his studio – located in the stables of an old castle – by photographer Tom Jungbluth, who documented the artist at work.

It’s an exciting month for him: his painting will go on show at the Luxembourg Art Week running 8th – 13th November, and his feature film Skin Walker, a “taut, stylish thriller” is playing as part of the European Film Festival based in Toronto.
