Karen Rosenberg of the NY Times made some good observations about artist Damian Ortega back in October: How Things Work (or Sometimes Don’t) – “The humor in Mr. Ortega’s art can also be traced to his first career, as a political cartoonist for Mexican magazines and newspapers. It’s both a strength and a weakness: he has interesting and provocative things to say, but often an arch delivery.”
You can see for yourself at Damian Ortega’s exhibition on at the Barbican until 16 Jan 2011. ‘The Curve’ is a ‘sculptural chronicle’ – the result of the artist challenging himself to create works in response to the daily news in the month of September 2010.
