Emma Tann’s piece\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>In My Craft or Sullen Art <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>is beautifully invested in the source from which the title was derived.\u00a0It is a piece of art – something to be viewed and studied – but it also as forlorn and unattended as a spider web. That the artist uses the doily as reference, and sometimes material, is particularly interesting in this context. Often overlooked, doilies have a strange doubleness, being practical and weirdly decorative, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>though designs of doilies were often published in the early 20<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup>\u00a0century, most of the designers were anonymous.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Not for ambition or bread<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Or the strut and trade of charms\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
On the ivory stages<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
But for the common wages\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Of their most secret heart.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
