Original painting in oil on stretched linen.

"'This painting is inspired by an article I read in The Guardian a while back. It talks about how astronomers claim that nearly half of the atoms in our bodies are formed beyond the Milky Way and have travelled on intergalactic winds to Earth. I find this quite mind blowing; that we are literally made out of intergalactic matter. We are all in one way or another immigrants on this Earth.'"

The classical scholar Georg Christof Tobler impressed Goethe, in 1782, when he wrote of the dual quality of nature. He exclaimed that within nature “we find ourselves at once surrounded and embraced by her – powerless to leave her, and powerless to fathom her more deeply”. Susanne Lund Pangrazio’s work seems very much inspired by the same idea of the power nature holds over humankind. She harnesses the idea of nature as both a challenge to humans and as a place of awe by incorporating elements of memory, folklore and fantasy. The work echoes the same dream-like nature of the paintings of Henri Rousseau and similarly, opens a dialogue to realms of artistic possibility. The paintings each use gentle, realistic tones which melt into fleshy, vivid colours creating unsettling narratives and which trace the spectacle of trying to control the enigmatic natural world.
