Always nice to find an excuse to use the word hypnagogic in a sentence! Hypnagogic: relating to that imaginative state immediately before falling asleep - a state that new artist Dominic Matthews seems to capture in his surreal, half-lit, filmic paintings.
Most of our artists have graduate from an art degree course though sometimes we stumble across a talented self taught artist and Matthews is a good example of such an artist - who started painting later in life and is self taught..
Snatches of hypnagogic-like scenes emerge onto canvas from the mind of Matthews. He describes his work as: ’stills from an unmade film, they [his works] are fictions…’
Not only does Matthew’s content emit a beautifully filmic quality, his palette too resonates sublimely with the whimsical and outlandish colour choices used in many of Wes Anderson’s films. Take for example, ’Two Saints’, which sees a cacophony of cerise, persimmon, and mint green.
