Ich Lebte und Starbe (I Lived and Died) (2012)

John Brennan

70 x 120 cm | 25 x 44 in

Subject: People

The painting sets up deliberate questions around identity, personal history and world history. It began life as a tiny wartime monochrome snapshot of a group of soldiers. I was fascinated by the the fact that this man, of whom we know nothing, may have committed war crimes, or else was caught up in the war as a serving soldier (his uniform is not SS).
