'Geranium in a Blue Bottle', painting in oil on wooden panel. Rosemary Lewis' still life paintings are closely observed studies of everyday objects painted from life. "While some of my paintings follow the established form of the genre, I also like to experiment with the placement of objects within the composition and with unusual viewpoints and lighting. I aim to engage the viewer with my realistic representation of colour, form, texture and light, but also retain an awareness of the paint quality itself. In all my paintings I try to achieve a balance between recording and responding to what I see, and making an interesting and beautiful surface when the painting is viewed up close. I have a loose, painterly style and prefer to suggest rather than paint in every detail."
