"The title is a deliberate contradiction that intends to question the role of the viewer in engaging with the narrative - are they the fourth party member? Following a deep and dark tradition of secret societies from the north-east of Scotland, 'horse whispering' has survived through the years not only in folklore but in diaspora, having taken root in the United States. Through vibrant colours and modern clothing the allusion to a sense of the contemporaneous becomes somewhat apparent, and the uniformity of the white hoodies demands a closer inspection of their connotation in this context. At the same time, the scene unfolds as rural absurdity, perhaps playing up to stereotypes in an ever urbanised and globalised age."

Humour and horror equalise each other in the unexpected illustrative landscapes of Aiden Milligan. Far from observing space in a traditional sense, Milligan rescues the depiction of rural life from banality by portraying allegory and narrative. Perhaps even more surprising is his capacity for creating suspense in the imagery. Indeed, many of the images have a feeling of absence which gives a macabre power to the pieces. Milligan’s confident use of negative space heightens the dramatic effect of each piece, yet the illustrative style refuses to let the creeping sense of threat control the narrative. Instead, the images play out multiple possibilities without succumbing to a fixed reading.
