"The choices made in the creation of collages which are then translated into paintings both inform, and are central to, the meaning of the work. There is a deliberate observation and inclusion of painterly highlights and shadows, generated from the cut out technique of the collage. This creates an absurd sense of depth while also making direct reference to reproduction. Subjects composed of clippings from ' fashion magazines' juxtaposed with classical inspiration means works reproduce familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. 'Elixir of Life' is related to the myths of Thoth and Hermes, both of whom in various tales are said to have drunk 'the white drops' (liquid gold) and achieved immortality. A darker piece, it explores notions of female image in the 21st century and modern day excess in the quest for 'eternal youth' and beauty."
Kristina Butigan constructs and executes her images with the meticulous deliberation of classical artists, also drawing from modern collage and popular media. On closer inspection of the figures that populate the historical allegory : Allegiance Will Blind Us If We Do Not Fall, you can recognise the sort of hipsters you see in bars around town. Like some groovy transfiguration, fashionable young pilgrims wilt under the light of divine revelation – the scene is both wonderful and ironic. In the darker Elixir of Life, Butigan tends more towards the surreal, with notable pop-art influences too.
