David Iain Brown

Since completing his Master’s Degree in Fine Art at Grays School of Art in 2018, Brown has exhibited widely. His most recent show was his first solo exhibition at Nina Sagt Gallery in Dusseldorf.

Brown draws on our connection to everyday life, his work focuses on the space between abstraction and reality. Taking inspiration from mundane objects and artefact and experiences and memories cultivated from the monotony of daily life - his work tells a story, is bold and built upon the history of its layers - with the concept of time passing as a prominent theme within the work. The work holds tensions - between the additive and subtractive process', the making and unmaking of an image.

More recently Brown’s practice has taken a more organic turn, inspired by the rural surroundings of his native Scotland, gardening with his grandfather and looking more deeply at the environment he encounters. Extracting from his surrounding he uses quick observational drawing from nature as new starting points for work - creating vibrant work with an energetic, immediate and gestural approach to mark making.
