Original mixed media painting in outdoor house paint, oils, marble dust and pencil on linen.
"The painting is painted on linen and I created a very textured background by using an old paint pot and mixing it with other paint. Using a palette knife I could spread the paint on to the line creating a layered surface. It brought out some interesting marks elsewhere. I worked from a photograph of the docks, highlighting the machinery and industrial aspects. The shapes of some features create an effective composition. The red colour adds an imposing element of the painting. I wanted to keep it quite minimal as the surfaces and impressive shapes of features become the painting. The crane is announced to the left of the painting, picking up a crate. It gives a contrast working in pencil and in detail to the rest of the painting. The shapes are quite abstract but you get an understanding of what they could be. In the bottom right of the painting a flow of water is described referencing the docks and their environment close to the water."
