'Archetypes', is an original drawing in graphite on layers of matt acrylic gel on wood . 'The layered drawing combines the characteristics of three teenage boys: their likenesses, hair styles and expressions merge together suggesting an archetype.'

On the judging panel for the BP Portrait Award 2015 and winner of the BP Portrait Award in 2009, Monkman is a distinguished emerging artist. His winning painting was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, entitled ‘Changeling 2’, it depicted his 12-year-old daughter on the cusp of adolescence. It was described as ‘compelling’ by the judges, and ‘incredibly bewitching and beguiling’ by journalist Charlotte Mullins. Monkman is currently Director of Art at Charterhouse having practiced as an artist and taught for over 20 years. He has recently exhibited at the Watts Gallery, the Threadneedle Prize at the Mall and the Jerwood Drawing Award as well as being a regular feature in the BP Portrait Awards.
In June 2015 a major portrait commission by Monkman of Children's Laurete Julia Donaldson was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery.
