"People drifting; with an aim yet aimlessly. A deceitful calm before the storm and a rest after an ordeal; a hope for something better. It's a dream just an inch away from being a nightmare; a tension in the air; waiting for something. And love."

The classical scholar Georg Christof Tobler impressed Goethe, in 1782, when he wrote of the dual quality of nature. He exclaimed that within nature “we find ourselves at once surrounded and embraced by her – powerless to leave her, and powerless to fathom her more deeply”. Susanne Lund Pangrazio’s work seems very much inspired by the same idea of the power nature holds over humankind. She harnesses the idea of nature as both a challenge to humans and as a place of awe by incorporating elements of memory, folklore and fantasy. The work echoes the same dream-like nature of the paintings of Henri Rousseau and similarly, opens a dialogue to realms of artistic possibility. The paintings each use gentle, realistic tones which melt into fleshy, vivid colours creating unsettling narratives and which trace the spectacle of trying to control the enigmatic natural world.
