Original painting in oil on canvas. Part of series of 4.
"More recently his ‘Fugitive’ series of paintings takes this theme further, and asks whether it is possible to depict what Charles Baudelaire in the 19th C described as the ‘ephemeral and fugitive’ with the ‘eternal and immutable’ within painting. Monkman’s paintings take this notion into the 21st C, where images are more unstable and complex, but still strive for the universal. In the series Fugitive 1 -4 an image of invented women with hats are transformed in a sequence which shifts and flickers from light to dark referencing film and photography with the loose brush strokes suggesting the fugitive and ungraspable."
