New Blood Art Statement

Tim Smith's handling of paint is reminiscent of Frank Auerbach - intense, gestural and thickly applied with bold impasto marks and colours. Nature, humanity, textures, patterns  and cultural motifs all jostle for space in his work.

A clamorous celebration of all things becomes a simple appreciation of form and colour; the way in which the painterly supersedes the subject evokes also the spirit of Jasper Johns. Smith draws from history, experience, fiction and fantasy to reflect his kaleidoscopic cultural vision.

Artist Statement

I don’t think we can go on as normal. I find myself looking at the world now and not quite believing what I see. Seeing myself as vulnerable I feel uncertain of what lies ahead in the coming months, and I think my painting has changed fundamentally because of that. I now want my painting to be an act that is personal to me as a way of keeping going, and level. If my paintings can function as a ray of hope for some, even in some small way, then that will be a way of me doing my bit. I now see my watchers as a benign presence, single figures isolated and watching over us, and my blossom tree even more of a symbol than it was before.

My work has always been driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what I want to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, I hope held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"

I see artists as the real superheroes of the modern world, saving us from the mundane everyday. I want my paintings to be the complete opposite of all that is around us in the world today, to provide an antidote to the pressures of life and do what art should - show us the world in a new way. I think now that there is a need for painting more than ever before.

Richard De Marco gave me the best advice ever - Tim, he said, always stay west of West and away from the centre. he was talking about Art, but its good advice for living now I think
