New Blood Art Statement

The classical scholar Georg Christof Tobler impressed Goethe, in 1782, when he wrote of the dual quality of nature. He exclaimed that within nature “we find ourselves at once surrounded and embraced by her – powerless to leave her, and powerless to fathom her more deeply”. Susanne Lund Pangrazio’s work seems very much inspired by the same idea of the power nature holds over humankind. She harnesses the idea of nature as both a challenge to humans and as a place of awe by incorporating elements of memory, folklore and fantasy. The work echoes the same dream-like nature of the paintings of Henri Rousseau and similarly, opens a dialogue to realms of artistic possibility. The paintings each use gentle, realistic tones which melt into fleshy, vivid colours creating unsettling narratives and which trace the spectacle of trying to control the enigmatic natural world.

Artist Statement

I create figurative paintings which I occasionally combine with sculptural elements to form pieces of fragmented stories which long to be told one small detail at a time. I collect old family photographs and newspaper clippings; some from after I was born but most from a time well before mine. My painting process often begins with browsing these photos until I find a detail which catches my eye. The detail then becomes part of something new and larger than itself, joined together with other imagery inspired by childhood landscapes, science fiction and folk lore.

I am interested in occupying the space in between the real and the imagined.
