Sam Wood’s raw and impassioned work is comparable to a thunderstorm: immensely powerful and oddly tranquil.

Often facing or looking away; turning to the environment these figures are embedded in gives the idea of what’s happening. In a typically subdued palette these introspective scenes of people and places by Sam Wood are quietly, deliberately enriched.

Working with oil into the surface of wooden panels, there is a real substance to Wood’s work that accurately reflects the content it holds in the raw humanity of his subjects. Embracing the ordinary and the seemingly mundane, Wood authentically layers the fidelity of his scenes with personable ambience and a deep calmness.

Rendered in oil paint, Wood describes how he will ‘layer, scrape and wipe areas of paintings,’ adding a tangible dimension to his work. He details how he underpins this practice with the desire to capture the mood of his subjects.

Sam's work was selected for the 2023 RSA Annual Exhibition.

Artist Statement

The themes my work are taken from everyday surroundings life and places, which mostly manifest through the people and architecture of my home city, Newcastle.

I work mainly in oil paint and realism is my main driving force, but while maintaining this, I feels as though it is very important to create mood and atmosphere through the work. I will layer, scrape and wipe areas of paintings to create areas of abstraction and realism.
