Sam Wood paints scenes drawn from everyday life – people in galleries, moments by the water, quiet gestures that often go unnoticed. Much of his work grows out of the streets and surroundings of his home city, Newcastle.
Working mainly in oil on wood panel, he brings together realism with subtle shifts of mood and atmosphere. He often layers, scrapes and wipes the surface to build a soft, atmospheric finish. The result is a subtle mood that sits easily with his grounded, everyday subjects.
His work was selected for the 2023 RSA Annual Exhibition.

The themes my work are taken from everyday surroundings life and places, which mostly manifest through the people and architecture of my home city, Newcastle.
I work mainly in oil paint and realism is my main driving force, but while maintaining this, I feels as though it is very important to create mood and atmosphere through the work. I will layer, scrape and wipe areas of paintings to create areas of abstraction and realism.
