New Blood Art Statement

Painting has an incredible power to understand landscape; it can portray the bewitching colour of the natural world or capture the indefinable, ever-changing sky. Much more than a photograph, painting captures the emotive rush of a landscape by capturing the visceral movement of clouds tumbling over the landscape, or the brilliancy of light which bathes the sky in colour. The paintings of Olivia Durley express the changing sky, from dark, cold, and foreboding to the soft morning light, tainted with the vibrant heat of sunrise. There is a sense of the ephemeral in her work - of the transient nature of time. Similarly, the absence and flux of colour and contour suggests the shifting nature of light. The paintings, like the skies of which they capture, are at once enigmatic and ever-engaging.

Artist Statement

My paintings explore ideas and images relating to nature and the landscape, scrutinising the evolving colours and tones amplified through cloud formations - the transition from the setting sun to dusky night and the ways in which I can link these traditional Romantic themes to the contemporary everyday. Photographs are used as a primary source material as these are integral to the paintings and help define the aesthetics within the work; I use my own images which reflect specific times of day, the temperament of weather and varied locations, combining cliché scenes with others more enigmatic. My practice appropriates a balance of the conventional aesthetics of a photograph and the materiality of painting, with certain works being representative of a Polaroid or postcard, and my blurred painting style permitting an inscription of a fleeting moment and sense of nostalgia. This dialogue is key to understanding the facture of the work, providing significance to the transience of time and encapsulating a ‘faded nature’.
