New Blood Art Statement

Malin Cederlund appears to share a fascination that possessed the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement: what exactly is the relationship between humans and nature? The Pre-Raphaelite’s imagined romantic dryads – humanesque creatures who shared their bodies with the trees - years later, Cederlund portrays a different story…

Experimenting with mark making, Cederlund crafts surreal landscapes, her technique reminiscent of Peter Doig’s Ten Etchings. Instead of shining a spotlight on where humanity fits within nature, Cederlund uncovers a rawness, an unkempt state of wildness; she appears to answer an unspoken question: that humanity comes as an afterthought. We see the humans in her work only in the twist of a tree branch that resembles a wrist, or a softly etched trunk that reflects a woman’s torso.

Artist Statement

My practice acts as an investigation of the relationship between humans and nature, and the impact we got on each other. Working with landscape painting is, for me, a way of looking back in time through an ongoing conversation with art history. An insight into the way humans have experienced nature over the history of time.

My paintings tend to be part realistic and part imaginative. I am interested in how this combination can shed a light on the temporary state of the landscape, today's climate change and ongoing cycles and processes.

I think of the landscape as a stage, and I get inspiration from theater backdrops and props. Landscape painting as a genre can be seen as secondary when it comes to contemporary art, and in my work the idea is to elevate the landscape from the background to the main role.
