New Blood Art Statement

Stepping towards the threshold of unbeknown space, Lottie Murphy’s paintings allow us to disappear into a conceptual vision of architecture and broad expanses. Engineering worlds of impossible structures and disappearing forms, Murphy exercises the imagination and protrudes alarmingly elusive landscapes. Brush strokes wash away boundaries to dizzying effect. There is a separation, from boundaries, from context, which allow Murphy to create a space free of everyday expectation. Suddenly doors are possibilities to unknown realms. Washes of colour sweep us off to impossible platforms. The elusive worlds are a freedom from reality and the painterly quality of Murphy’s work provides an absorbing space to escape to.

Artist Statement

My practice involves deconstructing photographs and found images of architecture, landscape and objects, reconstructing them as oil paintings. The scenes I create are concerned with liminal space, questioning the logic of the physical, virtual and imagined. One could interpret these spaces as an edge land, an unwanted territory or non place between the city and countryside, free from context and inhabitance. Someone to enter the painting would respond to the situation of the moment like every other, they are spaces only to be passed by.
