My art practice is centred around figurative painting, as I am interested in painting people I am close to. I use my connections and relationships with people in order to capture an intimacy in my work that I can relate to personally. My use of oil paint is very specific, as I aim for each brushstroke to be a part of the movement of the painting, creating a raw and truthful depiction of the subject. Colour and form are very important to me, because these are what bring a work to life, so I tend to focus on this when building a figurative work. My paintings begin as photographs, which I take with the intent of painting a revealing portrait. My process then includes cropping the photo until I have an image that represents the subject in a personal, intimate manner: It is about capturing an emotional closeness. My practice consists of different subjects and shows various parts of bodies and faces, but what ties all these together is the connection I have with each subject, and the aim of conveying an intangible moment through the physical practice of painting. I want my paintings to puncture through the stillness of a photograph and create something far more visceral. It isn’t about creating a replica of a photograph, but rather using the camera as a tool in the process of recreating my subjects. When I paint, it is like capturing an idea of the subject; quick and gestural. I release whatever I’m feeling into the painting, using my brushwork as a release, and this shows in the different ways my works emerge. My relationship with those I paint has the biggest influence on my work; it impacts how I portray them, and what aspect of them I choose to paint. My intention is always to create a work I think does the subject justice, and to leave enough to the imagination that the viewer can construct their own narrative about what is presented to them. I look to artists who capture the essence of their subjects in their paintings for inspiration; rather than those who only aim to create a perfect copy of their sitters.
