New Blood Art Statement

A wee dram of the Scots; a glimmer of China; a peppering of England – this is the essence that emerging artist Karlie Wu portrays in her work as she navigates her own cultural identity.

Working predominantly in oils on canvas, Wu’s style reflects a classic Renoir-esque technique as she layers oils to create studies filled with depth, drama, and emotion. However, the subject of Wu’s work does not mirror Renoir’s quite so closely; with a tendency to focus on urban narratives such as: a dad at a supermarket, a pair of trainers, or a man texting on a mobile phone whilst sat atop a fire hydrant. Wu recreates urban areas from her upbringing to astonishing effect, using a classical art style to make potentially ‘throw away moments,’ appear superbly special.

A wonderful new artist, finding delight in the everyday…

Artist Statement

My work loosely explores themes of nostalgia and cultural identity. My interest in nostalgia primarily stems from the stories, folk tales and reminisces of older relatives – an ‘inherited memory’ – and my own interactions with Kat O, a near abandoned island between the north east of Hong Kong and China which my paternal family emigrated from. Additionally, Hong Kong’s inextricable connection to British colonialism coupled with my Scottish upbringing is connected to my navigation of the term ‘cultural identity’: what it means to be Scottish, Chinese and British Chinese. Experimenting with documentary like photographs, drawings of unassuming interiors and objects, to paintings suggestive of fond memories, I observe, probe and wish to present a glimmer of what it might mean to be Scottish, and growing up as a second generation Chinese immigrant.
