Underwater Series: I intend for my paintings to evoke a direct and immediate reaction. I explore traditional portraiture from a fragmented viewpoint, depicting partial, incomplete, obscured objects.
I utilise the material properties of paint as a means towards concealment and erasure of the body. The initially detailed depiction of the face is layered over with thin layers of paint and varnish, creating the effect of the individual sinking into the canvas. The ambiguous submerging of the subjects body and face may be seen to describe a haunting or claustrophobic space but on the contrary, I find it enigmatic and comforting.
'Submersion' reflects a person and their feeling, whether good or bad. Some look to be sinking, feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Others look to be floating, almost in a dream-like atmosphere where there is a feeling of contentment and peace.
