New Blood Art Statement

Wade’s creative practice is by no means limited to the paintings that he creates, being accomplished in photography, music and the written word. However, the painterly limb of his practice is central to what he does – especially his abstracted work. Inspired by pioneering abstract expressionists, Wade uses this style of work to avoid ‘tunnel vision’ in what he creates. For him, abstract art allows him to respond to specific feelings and references without restriction. Indeed, his work is always representative of something he has experienced, and this can lead to large shifts in colour palette and style. However, one of his biggest influences remains the Cornish coast line which becomes intertwined with other locations such as the US where he lived for three years and other travel. A true believer in adapting your creative process for your outlook and current mood, he frequently returns to expressionism as well as wanting to reduce his ideas down through minimalism. Always fresh, his work feels dynamic and has a universality despite the personal, specific frame of reference.

Artist Statement

My work takes inspiration from Cornwall's landscape. I grew up in West Penwith and feel a strong connection to features of this place; the granite, coastline, harbours and moors. Through the years living here, I have developed an internal visual archive, built of memories, which I draw on either directly or indirectly when painting. Artists such as Roger Hilton and Peter Lanyon have greatly inspired me as I have explored the motifs, colours and forms of Cornwall. I usually work on several images at once, and feel as though I am playing a game of chess with several people. I go around the room, a move at a time, and every time I return to an image, I feel refreshed having come from the others. Because reality is only implied, suggested, or alluded to in my work, I feel a great sense of freedom. At once, I am giving form to human feeling; creating a rendition of my internal reality. I am an expressionist at heart, and greatly interested in the nature of the creative process, particularly its artistic variant. I am not just a painter, but a musician, photographer, writer, poet and filmmaker. I embrace the difference in my process as I believe it feeds the muscle behind all work: creativity.
